Multimodal Transportation
Multimodal transportations are transportations of one and the same cargo by various modes of transport. Types of used transport may be combined in any ways: road, rail, sea and air transportation. Generally speaking, any transportation is multimodal. In any transportation, cargo must be transported first from the sender warehouse to the port or the airport or the railway station of departure.
After main shipment cargo must be delivered from the port, airport, railway station of destination to consignee’s warehouse. In rare cases, namely in the case of highway transportation operation the cargo is delivered by one type of transport. In all other cases, always several modes of transport are used. For example, in air freight, in any case, it is necessary to deliver cargo to the airport by car. If you carry out sea freight, the cargo must be delivered first to the port by car or using the railway transport. If you carry out railway transportation, goods must be brought first at the railway station by car, etc. When transporting cargo by any means whatsoever, there is a number of issues, related to the safety of the product itself, transportation safety, clearance at customs posts, etc. Big carrier will provide the customer with maximum range of additional services.
But even the largest company cannot do everything: it is impossible to have own transport, warehouses and staff in all corners of the world. While virtually every transportation is carried out by several types of transport. Such shipments are called multimodal-they are required in the case of goods delivery by car up to the warehouse of destination after air, rail or marine transportation.
«Multimodal transportations are complex by arrangement for one transport company, and therefore it is more convenient to select multiple carriers and combine their interaction on delivery of the goods. In multimodal transportation, problems arise, related to loading-unloading of goods and possibility of damage or loss «.
For safety of goods, use of containerized shipping is practiced actively when the carrier company provides empty containers to the customer, provides cargo stowage in the container and seals it. Container is opened only at the point of destination that allows monitoring safety and security of goods transportation. Container shipping replaces rigging work. However, special packaging is required for certain types of goods, so virtually all transport companies offer services of experienced loaders to the customer.
Basically, main purpose of multimodal transportation is international traffic flows. Mainly , outbound import of goods. For example, from countries in Southeast Asia, one of our major trading partners to date, containerized shipping is carried out according to the following scheme. From Vietnamese Saigon, for example, cargo ship departs to Chinese trans-shipment point. From there, cargo is transported by rail to our customs point. Then it is cleared and delivered by car to the wholesale distribution warehouses.
Naturally, this is common scheme. However, it gives clear understanding of all benefits of multimodality. With all its complexity, it allows transporting goods in the shortest possible time, without exaggeration, in any point of the globe.
